“It’s dark, it’s raining, and you’re driving an unfamiliar dirt road. And your accountant? He’s beside you, working away, head down.”
That’s how most people experience accounting. We do it the other way round — eyes up, watching the road ahead for you.

Our head accountant is both a CPA and a Chartered Accountant with over 25 years in public practice. You’re getting the right advice, and you’re getting it from someone who knows you.
More about AIMMandalong is farms, acreage, horse properties and a scattering of businesses that don’t look like anyone else’s. That makes for returns that a general practice sees a few times a year and gets slightly wrong each time.
Primary production has its own rules and most of them exist to help you: income averaging so a good year doesn’t punish you, Farm Management Deposits, accelerated write-offs on fencing, water facilities and fodder storage, and different treatment for livestock trading stock. They’re only useful if someone applies them.
The threshold question comes first though — is what you’re doing a primary production business in the ATO’s eyes, or is it a lifestyle block with some animals on it? The answer determines everything downstream, and it’s worth settling deliberately rather than by accident.
Land held a long time raises questions that don’t come up elsewhere: what the capital gains position actually is, what the small business CGT concessions might do, how to pass a property to the next generation without a tax bill landing on someone who can’t pay it. These are slow conversations and they’re better had early.
Off-farm income, contracting, BAS, fuel tax credits, and super for people whose wealth is mostly in the land rather than in a fund.
